Well, the first season for the UNLV Lady Rebels Golf Team is in the books. And what a year it was. I think they did themselves proud starting as late as they did in the signing period, to come up to where they finished. True, they did not make the finals at the NCAA, but they played great as a first time team. And they did finish 5th at the Mountain West Conference Championship in Sunriver, OR.
Of course along the way there was some rough encountered. UNLV's best golfer, freshman Young Pak, was ruled ineligible a week before the season started. It was discovered that Pak needed to take a different math class from the one she had already completed, even though Pak was told her class would count.
On May 20, 2002 Coach Kelly Hester announced that she would leave UNLV to take a golf coach position with Arkansas. That's a shame! After one year - the first year for UNLV Woman's Golf, and the programs first coach - with the team, all the work and effort, put in by both Kelly and the team, and she abandons us! At least that's my word for it. ( You can tell I place a lot of emphasis on loyalty. ) So now UNLV will start the search all over again but at least this time there is a team in place and there is something more to offer the new coach. UNLV associate athletic director Lisa Kelleher said they hope to have someone in place by July 1. Wouldn't it be ironic if the new coach took the team to the championship?

2001-2002 Womens Rebel Golf Team Starts
UNLV is finally getting a college women's golf team - and it's about time! It sounds like their going to start at a fast pace to get the program off the ground and started recruiting on February 1, 2001, to have a team ready for competition by the fall season. Their home course will be the Anthem Country Club, but of course will be able to play and or practice at almost all the area courses - both private and public.
The new coach is Kelley Hester, and comes with good credentials. She is an LPGA teaching professional, and was an assistant coach at Georgia, her alma mater, during 1999 & 2000. Prior to that, she was the head women's golf coach at Mercer University. While attending Georgia, Kelley was a three-time all-Southeastern Conference and two-time Academic All-America selection for the Lady Bulldogs' golf team. After graduating from Georgia she played on the Futures Tour in 1996 and 1997 before coaching at Mercer. So, she has experience in all areas needed to put together a good team and train them.
Welcome to Las Vegas, Kelley - good luck with the team and may you go far with them!

2001-2002 Team Notes
Kelley's information and highlights about each of the players on the team can be viewed at Womens Team. I might add, that for as late in the season as she started, Kelley has latched onto some great selections. That says volumes for her ability to recruit & train members for a brand new and untried team.

For the 2002-2003 team, all five starters and eight players on this year's roster return for next season, as well as two top-ranked juniors. In her second signing class at UNLV, Hester inked Elena Kurokawa of Riverside, Calif., and 16th ranked California junior golf star Sunny Oh of Seoul, Korea to National Letters of Intent. Both junior players will play as freshmen next fall.
