The first golf course built in the Las Vegas valley and the busiest. This is our "Muni" course, and the rates used to be a lot lower than they are now. But after American Golf Corp took over the management and a $4 million upgrade venture, the rates were drastically increased. Still, for the price, I guess it is not bad. The upgrades included a new clubhouse, upgraded restaurant, a lake, new cart paths, 1,200 new pine trees, tee boxes, greens, increased parking and fencing. The course also has a large lighted driving range. The fairways are wide and forgiving, with hundreds of large established trees. Water comes into play on only 1 hole, the third hole, a par 3. It is a flat course that is good for beginners, and yet offers a decent and enjoyable game for the experienced players. The Nevada State Amateur Championship is played on this course every year. It gets a lot of play from the locals, so tees times on the weekend for visitors are almost out of the question, therefore you might want to consider this course for weekday play only.

Originally it was the Stardust Country Club (1961-1969), from 1969-1982 the name changes bounced around like a ball - The Sahara-Nevada Country Club - the Del Webb Country Club (for a short time) finally settling on The Sahara Country Club. In 1982 it became the properity of American Golf Corp., and from 1994-1997 it was called The Las Vegas Hilton Country Club. American Golf Corp. changed the name in 1997 to what it is now - The Las Vegas National Golf Club. ( Sounds like the Wildhorse scenario - you may never know the name of the course you played ). This course has been on TV many times. It was a stop on the PGA tour, and has hosted The Tournament of Champions, The Sahara Invitational, The LPGA Championship, one of the 3 courses for the 1995 & 1996 LV Invitational, and served as practice facility for the 1997 LVI. That should give you an idea of the quality of this course. A lot of trees, sand and water make this a super challenging course. The greens are always in great shape, fast and will hold a ball hit to them - however - some of the greens have breaks you can not see. You'll play one green that seems like a roller coaster and the next one will be normal. They are well guarded by some large bunkers that are not shallow. The fairways are large enough to give you a break if you don't hook or slice too bad. Yardage is marked on the sprinklers and the carts have yardage computers on them, which gives hints on how to play almost every hole. It is an enjoyably tough course to play.

Located on the Las Vegas Paiute Reservation, there are 4 courses planned for the area. Three are now open: Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain and Wolf, each described below. The soft spikes only courses are located in the extreme northwest part of the valley. With their location, both courses offer a super panoramic view of the distant skyline of Las Vegas, and all areas throughout the valley. I would suggest spending the $5.00 for the yardage books (for either course) to get an idea of how to play each hole. The books are great. One other big note: keep the ball in the fairway - the Bermuda roughs are murder as they are cut to 3 - 3 1/2" high - but it sure feels like 6". Bring an extra dozen balls - whichever course you play - as the ball just disappears in the high rough. A great 50,000 sqft clubhouse highlights the course. Golf Digest rated it #8 of the top 10 in Nevada, May, 1997, and the #1 public course in Las Vegas. All of these courses are well worth the drive to play, as many of us locals do just that.

Natural desert landscaping, but not so much of a target type course as Sun Mountain. It is a challenge that can beat you to death, yet you will enjoy the beating. Either or both courses should be a must play on your list if you like a challenge game and views that are fantastic. There are many doglegs with hidden sand traps. The fairways are not your typical flat desert ones, but have many little mounds with valleys through out the course. The course includes pot bunkers, lakes, and greens that are super fast but always in great shape. One reason is that they seem to have a night crew that replaces and repairs the fairways and tee boxes that have been damaged by divots. What class!

This is a links style course, with no parallel holes. The fairways are forgivingly wide but this is offset by greens that are small and fast. But be aware - the wind can blow like crazy on these courses. And with the increased elevation due to where the courses are located, can be 10-15 degrees cooler than Las Vegas which is great in the summer time. There is less water ( only on 4 holes ) on this course, and the fairway bunkers should not cause any trouble EXCEPT - the 14th has a bunker that will scare the h--- out of you if your in it.

Las Vegas Paiute Wolf Links -
Opened on November 1, 2001.
Tee times: up to 60 days in advance.
The Wolf Links course is the third of four planned courses at the Paiute Resort, located in the northwest part of the city off U.S. 95. The course was also designed by Pete Dye. Annika Sorenstam and Karrie Webb, the top women's golfers in the world, inaugurated the Wolf course October 9, 2001, with a match that was taped and aired on Shell's Wonderful World of Golf on ESPN, October 23, 2001. (Karrie won the event)
The Wolf course plays a lot different than the other two courses. It is a more severely mounded course with numerous elevation changes and more canyons and slopes, plus it has two lakes.

A links style course that was built on top of the old lava flows of the southern part of the valley. A tough course! The fairways are long and sometimes very narrow and even tiered. The second hole has a sand trap on the left side that is about 100yds long! The greens are elevated and surrounded by bunkers, so plan your approach shot. The 10th tee is known for the unusual tee boxes - they in the shape of a heart, club, spade, and a diamond. The back nine ( holes 11-13) even has our own version of "Amen Corner", we call it "The Devils Triangle", which can make or break your round. The Legacy is host to the U.S. Open qualifying (if that gives you an idea of the toughness) and the AJGA Las Vegas Founders Legacy Tournament. The Legacy was operated by OB Sports, but in early 2001 sold to the Heritage Golf Group from San Diego.

The course winds through the gated community of Los Prados. I think it is an excellent beginner's course and a course to play when you want your ego stroked. That is not to say it is super easy, but it does seem to play shorter than you feel the yardage should. Even though it is a short course, the are some fairways that are very tight, and will make you think about setting up your second shot. The greens are hard, but produce some very true putts. It is a friendly course and that just matches the attitude of the staff. They are always kind and helpful.

This course is a true desert target type course, and is played through the middle of a housing/condo development. The tees are separated by desert area and the fairways are narrow. On some holes, keep the driver in the bag for a better landing area. There are almost 100 sand traps to test your skill (in either avoiding or getting out), along with plenty of fairway bunkers. A premium is placed on hitting it straight on this course. The whole course - fairways and greens - are always in good condition, so your play will be enjoyable. The greens can be tricky, with unexpected breaks and contours. This is a great layout for the better than average golfer of 15 or less handicap. Rounds can be slow to very slow here, as no one seems to care about speeding up slower players. American Golf Corp is the course manager.

Another Sun City Retirement development course, locals refer to this course as the lower course because it is lower in elevation than Highland Falls. The staff is very friendly and seems really to want to help you have a good game. It also offers some fantastic views of the Vegas Valley. There are only two holes (10th & 18th) that are parallel to each other, as the course is also laid out through a housing development. Water is around on 7 holes, but really comes into play on only 3 holes. It is not the normal desert type course, it has some downhill holes that are a ego builder (especially the par 5), and some uphill holes (one particular par 5) that make you wonder if you will ever get to the green. Nice wide sloped fairways helps keep the ball in bounds, and the rough does not try to hide the ball from you. However, the fast, tricky greens can more than make up for those forgiving items, and you must keep the ball below the hole. Palm Valley also keeps a block of tee times open on the weekend for outside play.

- Note on Course Rates - The rates posted within these pages are as accurate possible and current when I contact the individual courses. I check with each course about 6 times a year to keep as current as possible. However, they can change without notice and just because the rates are posted on this web site, does not mean that is the rate they must allow you to play at. Please check with the course that you are interested in playing to get the latest rates for the time of year you will be playing.
I have summarized the courses by rates on the Rate Summary Page. This page will seasonally change and maintain a list of the courses by lowest to highest rates.
- Map of Course Locations - To give you a rough idea of where the courses are located in relation to where you may be staying, I have included a color-coded map. It is not to any scale, and only some major streets are shown. I am not a map maker - as you can tell - but it should give you the basic idea. The colors of the numbers correspond to the color coding of the different sections of courses. I did notice that if you use the web site information by "Golfweb" or "iGolf", there are very detailed maps to the location of each course. You can zoom in and out to get a really good picture of the relationships of the course to where you will be staying. If either one has a link to the course, it is located under "Additional web information" at the end of the description of each course.
