Angel Park
100 S. Rampart - Las Vegas, NV 89128. 1-866-457-0062, 702-577-2220
About a 30 minute drive from strip.
Opened in 1987, designed by Arnold Palmer.

The Angel Park complex offers a choice of three different courses; two 18 hole layouts, (Mountain & Palm - listed below) and a 9-12 hole Par 3 ( see Cloud Nine description ). The complex also has a unique (lighted for night play) 18 hole putting course, complete with sand traps and water hazards, that is fun to play and will test your putting ability to the maximum. It is a lot of fun, so allow some extra time to play it. There are three practice putting greens, driving range, pro shop and restaurant to make this a complete place to play a round or two. On both 18 hole courses, the yardage markers are on the sprinkler heads, with bushes or Yucca plants at 150yds, and short Bk/Wh stripped poles in the middle of the fairway to mark 125 yds to the green's center. Either course you play, bring some extra balls - if the water don't get you, the desert will! If you are playing in the summer, it is not recommended that you pursue a lost or OB ball in the desert - there are rattlesnakes in the rocks! The county owned Angel Park facility was operated by OB Sports, but in early 2001 management of the complex was transferred to the Heritage Golf Group from San Diego.

The Mountain Course is played up, down, and in-between hills and valleys of the upper desert, and even across the washes and arroyos. This course is always in top condition and well maintained. I think it is the prettier course of the two ( even though it is supposed to play harder ) and I love the greens in the summer. They are great - soft, smooth, and they hold a shot well. But let me tell you this - they break towards the valley. The fairways are fairly wide and the rough is not all that tough. The course is dotted with hundreds of pine trees that will only challenge your game more. It offers some beautiful panoramic views of the Vegas Valley. Water comes into play on 6 holes, with 3 holes crossing canyons that can unnerve you.

The Mountain Course has completed a renovation to extend the lake separating the ninth and 18th holes, making the two par-4 holes more difficult. They spent $1.4 million to upgrade the lake, extending it out nearly to the tee boxes on Nos. 9 and 18. Previously, the water did not come into play on a golfer's tee shot and only affected the 2nd shot into the green. But after the renovation, it now plays a factor on both shots. - Thanks A Lot, Guys!

The Palm is a different type of course than the Mountain. The greens are harder and faster, but do not have the undulations that the Mountain Course has and are generally in good condition. The levelness of the greens will allow more birdie or par opportunities. Water comes into play on 5 holes, with over the canyon shots on 7 holes - that's 12 holes that command attention. There is a par 3 ( hole 12 ) that has about a 100ft drop from the tee to the green - with a big damn rock ( boulder is more like it ) right between you and the pin and it is on the front edge of the green. It can be a totally different course when the wind is blowing, as the way it is laid out, there is nothing to stop it. There are very few trees on this course, mostly stands of palms - hence the name of the course. There are also some beautiful views of the valley and of the TPC-Summerlin course, which is just west of the course.

This course was chosen to host the 1997 USGA Public Links Qualifier in June and the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in 2000. The carts are equipped with satellite yardage indicators, so you always know how far it is to the middle of the green, (and the pro shop can send you a message to speed up play). A lot of grass and sand bunkers but few trees. Some real elevation changes on some holes will cause you to think before you hit. As a matter of fact, this is completely a thinking course to play it well, and a bogey can be a good score. Beautiful views of the Vegas valley and the Red Rock Canyon Mountains are a bonus to playing here. It is true target golf, but offers large landing areas on some holes to help, yet emphasis is still placed on accuracy - plus hitting straight shots. If you think your a great golfer - welcome to the humbler - this course will do it. The wind can give you fits due to its open layout. Generally the greens are medium-sized, but some of them are small. Voted as the best golf course by "the local players" in the LV Review Journal "Best of Las Vegas", March 23, 1997, and rated #10 of the top 10 golf courses in Nevada by Golf Digest, May 1996.

They added a third nine holes that has more landing areas, wider fairways, lush greens, more lakes - and get this: NO sand in the bunkers! The bunkers are grassed. As a 27 hole layout, two of the three nines are rotated daily to offer a different course each time you play and give one nine a rest from play, and insure that during reseeding time, there will be a full 18 to play. This should go even farther to making this a great place to play, but still, not really for the high handicapper. I recommend buying the yardage book and sitting in the restaurant before playing to look it over.
The restaurant has unique place mats - they are copies of the score cards from the latest tournament for the SPGA, PGA & LPGA played in Las Vegas. Both PGA/Nike Tour players Eddy Fryatt and Craig Barlow play out of Badlands. The course was owned and operated by Senior Tour Players Development, Inc., with some of the nicest staff you could find in Vegas. It was sold to American Golf Corp. Personally, I hated to hear that, judging from my personal experience with the other locally owned AGC courses.

"A New Wave of Golf on the Strip". That's how they are billing themselves, and it looks like they are correct. It is located on the strip, just south of the Mandaly Bay Hotel, and just off the end of the runway for McCarren International Airport. With the Desert Inn Golf Course closing, it will be the only course left on the strip. Developed on 110 acres, the course is a South Seas theme layout with bleached white Augusta sand (beautiful - looks like snow), black volcanic rock and more than 4,000 trees including 2,500 palm trees and over 100,000 tropical plants and flowers. It's awesome to drive by and see it, and your eyeballs will get one heck of a work out just playing with all the stark variations in color. Cost for the entire project was about $32 million ( now you know why it is such a high end course ). It is another Bill Walters course ( see Desert Pines - listed below, Royal Links, and Stallion Mountain ).

Although not for the "faint of pocketbook", it is a high-end daily fee course that is a heck of a challenge to play. Challenging? Well let's just see: There are five lakes on the course, and the water will come into play on eight of the 18 holes. For example, the 16th hole is only 141 yds long - but the dang thing is completely surrounded by water, except for a small bit of land on the backside. There are five par 4's that are over 440 yds, a lot of the fairways are of a rolling style, there are many, many white beach type sand bunkers, and the short holes have very undulating greens. Now, according to Walters, "We built this course for the 20-handicapper, not the touring pro". Well, I'll just tell you, his idea of a 20 h'cper is sure different than mine! Forecaddies are available, and all carts are equipped with a GPS system.

This course was designed by "The Bear". Although designed for tournament play, it will be a daily fee course, featuring 18 replicas of golf holes from some of his previous courses. Located in a Real Estate Development area (The Ridges) in the Summerlin area (west side of Las Vegas) with houses surrounding the course. It is also next to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Bear's Best used holes from the following courses: one each from Castle Pines in Denver, CO., Cabo del Sol, Palmilla and Eldorado in Mexico, Bear Creek in Murietta, CA., La Paloma in Tucson, AZ., and Desert Highlands in Scottsdale, AZ. He used two holes from Old Works in Anaconda, MT., and Las Campanas in Santa Fe, NM.; three from the PGA West in Palm Springs, CA.; and four holes from Desert Mountain in Scottsdale, AZ. A forecaddy (required) will give you not only tips on how to play the hole, the way each green breaks, but also include a little history about each hole you play. Nice touch!

Playing over 7,000 yds from the tip, for best enjoyment don't get stupid and play from them if you do not have a single digit handicap. Pick the tee that is suited to your game, as each hole has as many as seven sets of tees. Believe me - you'll still see all the course but enjoy it more if you do.

Black Mountain is a 27 hole semi-private course, with soft spikes only required. Walking allowed except weekend mornings and holidays. Clubs & pull cart rentals are available. Host course of the USGA Regulation Tournament, US Open Qualifying site, Qualifying site for the US Publinx Championship, and the US Mid-Amateur, and has served as the Las Vegas Invitational Qualifier in the past. I have to be careful what I say, as this is my home course (and I have pride in it), so naturally I want to be biased. I have not broke 80 on it yet, but there is always this weekend ( The closest I have shot is 82 - a record for me anywhere ).

A forgiving - yet deceptive - course to play with wide fairways and water only on two holes (three if you really toe a tee shot on the 5th) - however - it is unique in that there are only 4 holes ( the 6th & 7th, and the 16th & 17th ) that do not have OB on both sides of the fairway. Even though it is a semi-short course, top amateurs have been known to score higher here than at some of the other longer courses. Black and white striped poles in the center of the fairway are the 150 yds markers, and the sprinkler heads are marked with the yardage to the center of the green. Greens are a mix of both slow and fast with some tiered greens thrown in to make it interesting. The course sits above the valley and offers some beautiful views of the Vegas area from some of the holes. This course is sneaky in that it looks a lot easier to play than it is. It offers challenges to the low handicapped player, yet is forgiving to the high handicapped. The course advertising emphasis "Southern Nevada's Best Kept Secret" - but I think "Drive A Little - Enjoy A Lot" really defines the play at Black Mountain.

The Horizon nine (original front nine) is open with wide fairways circling a large desert area that is home to an assortment of wildlife; quail, rabbits, hawks and coyotes. The greens on the front are small and place a big emphasis on shot making, with breaks that you swear is not what you saw. The Founders back nine (original back nine) starts off with one of the toughest three-hole stretches in town. It is much tighter as it runs between a housing tract and is lined with large trees. The back nine greens are sloped, undulating, and generally break toward the railroad tracks (north to north-east). The course sits above the valley and offers some beautiful views of the Vegas area from some of the holes. This course is sneaky in that it looks a lot easier to play than it is. It offers challenges to the low handicapped player, yet is forgiving to the high handicapped. The Desert nine (newly opened Nov 1, 2002) is a world of difference! There are carry-overs on every hole, some short - some not! The fairways are wide enough to help you out, but not as wide as the other nines. The greens are much larger than the other nines, but are still new and are hard to hold a shot. This will change in time, but for now land your shorts just a bit short or on the front edge of the green and you should be ok. They are also more undulating than the others and I still have not figured out all the breaks. I find they mostly break the other way (from what ever I read!).

Special Note: This is the course that Tiger Woods caddied for his friend trying to qualify for the USGA Amateur Public Links Qualifier in 2000. For photos, please see the Black Mountain Home Page listed below. Also you may read the LVRJ Article

A traditional style layout with lots of trees but wide fairways and large greens. The course is fairly flat, skirts a housing addition and in 2000, added more water hazards ( oh no! ). They did a lot of renovations that really did improve the course. The drawback to Boulder City - and it's not that bad - is that some of the fairways are side by side and very close to each other - even though they are wide - and you may find yourself ducking stray golf shots from another fairway. The greens are large and in good shape and putt well, but the speed varies from green to green. It is a very enjoyable course to play and worth the extra drive. At the price, the lower rate more than makes up for the 30-45 minute drive from Las Vegas and the extra gas used.

68. Boulder Creek Golf Club -
1501 Veterans Memorial Drive Boulder City, NV. 89005 - 1-866-457-0062, 702-577-2220
Opened in January 2003, it is about a 45 minute drive from the strip.
Designed by Mark Rather

Tee times: up to 7 days in advance.

The first part of a 2nd municipal course for Boulder City is now open. This course, when completed will actually be quite a setup. Three 9 hole layouts (named: Desert Hawk, Coyote Run, Eldorado Valley) at 7,400 yards for 18, a lighted 9 hole Par 3 layout and a double ended lighted driving range. Each 9 hole set will have palm trees, beach bunkers, lakes and waterfalls. There will be 6 tee boxes on every hole to offer the right challenge to each golfers skill, and the fairways will be 100 yards wide. And get this - cameras attached to eight poles on the course will link to the Global Positioning Satellite system in each golf cart. The cameras can photograph a golfer playing the course or videotape the golfer's swing. A professional then can analyze the swing and send it back with a tip within four holes. Later the golfer can get a CD with his swing on it. Local PGA Tour player Chris Riley has been one of the key consultants on the project and has agreed to represent the course. He will carry its logo on his golf bag in PGA Tour events. The Boulder Creek is located across the street from Boulder City Municipal Golf Course.

Designed, owned and operated by the Stimpson family since it opened, Craig Ranch is not long, playing only 6000yds from the tips. It is nicely laid out but the fairways are tight and very narrow. There are 7,000 well established trees ( mostly desert pine type ) that help to make it completely secluded from the outside world. The course has with few bunkers, and is very flat. The greens are fast and small but you want to try to land the ball below the hole for a better chance at a birde or even par. This total combination can offer a decent challenge to your game. Several holes are doglegs that can tempt you to cut the corners, but with the size of the trees, you better think about your shot. If you get the shot up high enough, you can cut the corners and shave those strokes - but if you don't, it can be out of bounds. There are a couple of thinking holes - the 8th is a par 4 with a huge crater on the left of the fairway, and the 9th has a giant tree to carry over for the best chance but the pond on the left may be where your ball ends up. You may not use your driver here often, opting for the 3 wood instead. With many of the fairways running parallel to one another, you will find it easy to recover from a bad slice or hook. Don't try to play on the weekend mornings - it is solidly booked by local players, as the rates are the same for visitors and residents. Craig Ranch's chief asset is its affordability. But, as you might expect from green fees this low, the conditions aren't always great. In the winter, the fairways may be spotty and the greens are hard, and sometimes with problems. But if you're trying to cut golfing expenses, or if you are just a beginner, this may be the course for you.

NOTE:
June 19, 2002: There is talk that the Stimpson's want to trade the golf course ( GASP! ) to the city of North Las Vegas for some other land. The city would then close the course (DOUBLE GASP!) and make a damn park out of it. I apologize to all our visitors - we have some stupidity in our local cities!

- Note on Course Rates -
The rates posted within these pages are as accurate possible and current when I contact the individual courses. I check with each course about 6 times a year to keep as current as possible. However, they can change without notice and just because the rates are posted on this web site, does not mean that is the rate they must allow you to play at. Please check with the course that you are interested in playing to get the latest rates for the time of year you will be playing.

I have summarized the courses by rates on the Rate Summary Page. This page will seasonally change and maintain a list of the courses by lowest to highest rates.

- Map of Course Locations -
To give you a rough idea of where the courses are located in relation to where you may be staying, I have included a color-coded map. It is not to any scale, and only some major streets are shown. I am not a map maker - as you can tell - but it should give you the basic idea. The colors of the numbers correspond to the color coding of the different sections of courses. I did notice that if you use the web site information by "Golfweb" or "iGolf", there are very detailed maps to the location of each course. You can zoom in and out to get a really good picture of the relationships of the course to where you will be staying. If either one has a link to the course, it is located under "Additional web information" at the end of the description of each course.
