An 18 hole championship course in the middle of a Del Webb gated housing development. It is a long 7,293 yard par 72 championship layout with 4+ tee boxes per hole, and a 32,000sqft clubhouse. The course is located in the South area of the city, near the Revere Golf Course. It is a private course, with equity ownership rights obtained by the members purchasing houses within the development, however limited public play is available until all homes are sold. The course wanders through the higher desert of the Vegas Valley, offering spectacular views of the valley at every turn. It uses the desert terrain to highlight the holes and the play throughout the canyons and hill tops. The course is enhanced by all the creeks and beautifully integrated waterfalls at various holes. The course is well manicured with generally good greens. Do not try to read break into them as they put very true. It was a pleasure to play this course, and I can recommend it - just play the tees that suit your handicap and you will also enjoy the course. They are also planning three additional courses plus an executive layout within the area.

A private country club which has played host to the LPGA. Guests must play with or as a guest of a member, however the Club Corporation of America offers limited reciprocal play, so be sure to inquire with to see if your club qualifies. It is a beautiful course to play and offers you a great game, if you can get on. There are 12 holes where water either comes into play or is a moderate factor. It is a super course that is both fair to the player yet will offer some good challenges, but stay out of the rough as it is not kind to those who venture there. This course has lots of water, sand bunkers, and narrow fairways with greens that putt true with out a lot of hidden breaks. It is always in great shape and very well taken care of.

61. Cascata Golf Club
Boulder City, NV - No Address, No Phone!.
Opened end of December 2000, designed by Reese Jones.

Was originally going to be called Park Place, but the name changed before opening to Cascata. This is a high-end course reserved only for guests of the Park Place string of hotels. It is now the most exclusive course in the state - no membership available, and you notice, no address or phone number. During the first year of operation, it took a $100,000 credit line at the tables to get to play this course (although they said a $25,000 MIGHT get you on). Now, they have considerably loosened their policies so that guests at the Park Place properties (Bally's Las Vegas, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, Las Vegas Hilton, and Paris Las Vegas), can play a round for a mere $500 and no gaming minimum. Well! That changes everything - honey, book me a room & make me a tee time! The general rumor is that the course ran around $52 million to build. It was designed, built and opened without any fanfare or publicity that normally goes with the opening of a new course. So quite has this course been completed, that probably 98% of the local golfers don't even know about it, and 99.999% will probably never play it.

Located in the Red River Mountains of Boulder City, NV, Cascata is 800 acres (7,000 yds from the back tees, - Par 72) of secluded and very private 18 holes of golf overlooking the El Dorado Valley. The views of the valley open up a panoramic scene of desert beauty. Private? Secluded? With a gate at the entrance, they will not even let you through just to look around. Crowded? No problem there - with an average of 8 golfers a day, you do not have anyone to bother your game. You can even play as a single with your own personal caddy. A feeling of "e;Lost in your own world" will come over you as notice no one else is around, and for the most part - you can't see any other hole from the one you are playing.

Public Play Allowed

An 18 hole private country club within the MacDonald Highlands complex of homes and developments. The course will be the highlight of the luxury home community overlooking the Las Vegas Valley as it is also located at the base of the Black Mountain Range. MacDonald Highlands has gone to great expense to maintain the desert surroundings while incorporating both a housing development and golf course in the area. It will have a limited number of memberships - but, until the memberships have sold out, it is available for public play.

A real nice course even though it is new. You couldn't tell the course had just opened when I played it. It winds through the foothills of the Black Mountains with the fairways in between the ridges. You have a panoramic view of Henderson and Las Vegas from most of the holes. Their whole focus at this course is to have a top notch conditioned course - and they are right on with that focus. There are 5-7 Tee boxes per hole, so you will always have a good teeing area to start the hole - after then, it's up to you! The course was designed to make it playable for all skill levels, but to always keep players off-balance. It consists of split fairways within the natural desert mountain surroundings, blind shots off the tee (and approaching the greens), and strategically placed bunkers, makes you wonder about your club selection and accuracy in approaching the greens. They succeeded - I was "off-balanced" a lot!

Most of the holes have a "Carry-over" to reach the fairway (some of which test your skills) - they do have a sic bit of humor here: - they call them "Wondrous Carry Overs". Although it is not really a target golf type of course, it may seem that way from the tees. You will notice a "Scottish" flair with the wide rolling fairways, but for the most part, they are generous and tend to slope inward, giving some relief for those marginal shots. ( Although I contributed generously to the Desert Golf Gods. )

The greens are large, inviting, and treacherous - well, at least deceiving. They are undulating and there are unforeseen breaks - be sure to read them again for the best feel. Then putt what you saw - not what you think! When you start your round, the cart attendant will give you a briefing on the pin locations and just how the breaks are occurring for that placement - a nice touch. The whole staff seems bent on making sure that you have an enjoyable game. I can recommend it highly for play.

The Wendy's 3-Tour Challenge - for the first time - will be held at the Dragon Ridge C. C. The previous 6 years, it has been held at the Lake Las Vegas Resort. It will be Nov. 5. and will air on ABC from 1-3 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 22. The event has been won by the LPGA 2 times, and 4 times each by the Seniors and the PGA tours.

A private course located behind the LV Hilton Hotel and the Las Vegas Convention Center, just off the strip. The course has been on television as a host course of the PGA Las Vegas Invitational tournament play (again in 1997 as one of the courses played for the LVI ). It is always in top shape, both the large well protected greens and the fairways. Don't read as much break in the greens as it looks, and you will putt better. Houses & condos surround part of the course, so it seems more secluded, but the view of the hotels is still very present because of its location. It is not open for play and must be played with a member or as a guest of a member. There are no reciprocal arrangements available.

The first of two 18 hole championship courses designed by Arnold Palmer for the gated community of Red Rock Country Club. The course is located in the Summerlin area (west) of the city. This course adds to the courses with panoramic views of the valley. It has hundreds of trees ( mostly Palms ), along with water holes that are distracting in their views. Some of the holes run East & West, making them an uphill/downhill type of play. Great greens, in fact, Arnold said "This is the way greens should be built". The practice range includes a 13,000sqft putting green, bunker practice, and a driving range with 6 target greens. It also includes a clubhouse and pro shop.

47. Rio Secco

Designed by Rees Jones, in the Seven Hills development the course is being laid out between canyons and ridges of the Henderson desert, (south of Las Vegas) as a 7,000yd test. The lay out of the course is through canyons & arroyos and on the top of the plateaus of the hillside. Originally planned and built as a private club for homeowners in the development , it was purchased by the Rio Hotel for $25 Million as an enticement for hotel guests. The name was then changed to Rio Secco Golf Course. I met a representative of the course during the 1997 Las Vegas PGA International Show, and discussed the course and playability. It seems as though the plans are to leave it as a private course, but only for guests of the Rio. After some legal stuff, it was opened for public play - for residents of Clark County only - in October 1997. It is a fantastic challenge for the low-mid handicap, but can be a real toughie for the high handicaper. Golf Magazine rated it as on of the "Top 100 You Can Play", in the March Issue (1997).

- Map of Course Locations - To give you a rough idea of where the courses are located in relation to where you may be staying, I have included a color-coded map. It is not to any scale, and only some major streets are shown. I am not a map maker - as you can tell - but it should give you the basic idea. I did notice that if you use the web site information by "Golfweb" or "iGolf", there are very detailed maps to the location of each course. You can zoom in and out to get a really good picture of the relationships of the course to where you will be staying. If either one has a link to the course, it is located under "Additional web information" at the end of the description of each course.
