Scott Lander, a Senior from Kingman AZ, is writing a diary of the tournaments for the UNLV golf team. Follow his comments and thoughts as he goes through his final year of college competition with the golf team. At this location, you will find his latest entry along with the archives from previous entries. Weekly Player Diary.

July 3, 2000 - The UNLV golf team had three members of its team elected to the 2000 Academic All-Mountain West Conference men's golf team. Jeremy Anderson, Senior, 3.52, (Business Management), Michael Kirk, Senior, 3.01, (Business Management Information Systems), and Scott Lander, Junior, 3.03, (Business Marketing ), were all honored by the Mountain West Conference Monday. To make the Academic All-Mountain West Conference team, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, have reached sophomore status or higher and have competed in at least half of the team's events for the season. Well done guys, and good luck.

June 5, 2001 - UNLV senior golfer Scott Lander was selected to the Division I PING All-America team, the Golf Coaches Association of America. Lander earned honorable mention honors after a stellar season in which he finished second in the Mountain West Conference with a 72.56 stroke average, was chosen to represent the U.S. at this year's Palmer Cup competition, and climbed to 48th in the latest MasterCard rankings, administered by the GCAA and the College Golf Foundation.

May 22, 2001 - UNLV's hopes were dashed for a NCAA tourney berth for first time since 1988. Read Coach Knight's thoughts and insights at this LVRJ article:  UNLV'S Streak Snapped.  Hey, this team will be back with fire next year - watch them kick some college butts then!

April 30, 2001 - Senior Scott Lander Chosen To Palmer Cup Team and becomes the fourth Rebel represented on the U.S. squad. - UNLV senior golfer Scott Lander was one of seven collegiate golfers selected to play in the 2001 Palmer Cup presented by CSFBdirect, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced on Monday. See the full article at : Lander

April 16, 2001 - The UNLV men's golf team has signed J.C. Deacon of Unionville, ONT, Canada, to a national letter of intent, head coach Dwaine Knight announced Monday. Complete article at:
UNLV signs Deacon
Deacon joins Ryan Moore, who signed with UNLV during the early signing period last fall, to complete the Rebels' 2001 recruiting class.

March 7, 2001 - The UNLV Athletics Department announced the 2001 UNLV Rebel Academic Top 30. This year's group, included Scott Lander for the Golf team, and reflects the 31 UNLV student-athletes (31 and not 30 because of a tie) with the highest grade point averages for the spring 2000 and/or fall 2000 semesters. All students were enrolled in and completed a minimum of 12 credits and achieved a semester GPA of 3.90 or higher for one or both semesters.

1999-2000 Data, Stats & Information

The UNLV golf team opened the 1999-2000 season ranked second in the nation in the preseason edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. UNLV, which finished the 1998-99 campaign as the No. 2 team in the nation and sixth at the NCAA Championships is only behind Clemson in the rankings.
Individually, UNLV senior Michael Kirk is the highest ranked Rebel at No. 7. Other UNLV players ranked are senior Jeremy Anderson at No. 11 sophomore Adam Scott at No. 24.
UNLV junior golfer Jeremy Anderson was named the 1998-99 UNLV Olympic Sports Sportsman of the Year. Anderson was selected by the men's Olympic sports head coaches to receive the honor. Anderson was named a 1999 first-team All-American and is UNLV golf's first recipient of that honor since 1994. He won two individual titles this season and was named the WAC Player of the Year.

For the 97-98 season, the UNLV Rebels opened ranked #4 in the Master Card Collegian Golf Rankings.

I am pleased to point out that coach Knight was chosen to captain the U.S. squad of the Ryder cup-style collegiate golfers against those from England & Ireland. UNLV golfer Ted Oh was also named to represent the US in those matches. The match, played July 10-12 at Bay Hill Club in rlando, Florida, was won by the U.S. rather strongly: 19 1/2 US, 5 1/2 Europe.

May 1997: Ted Oh has been chosen to represent the US in the Palmer Cup, a Ryder Cup style match for college students, in July at the Bay Hill Country Club in Orlando, Fl. The players were chosen by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Palmer Cup will alterrnate between the US and Europe each year.

Ted Oh announced ( August, 1997 ) that he will leave UNLV and turn professional this year. He received enough Asian endorsements and sponsorships ( from what I heard - about $1,000,000 ) to allow him to compete on the Asian tour. Look for him on the PGA tour in a year or two.

Sophmore Jeramy Anderson won individual 1st place in the Golf World Invitational, November 14-16, 1997.

See what Golf Week Magazine had to say about the UNLV Rebels Golf Team

December 16, 1997: Jeremy Anderson, a sophomore, has been chosen as the WAC golfer of the month for November. Jeremy was 3-0 in the Rolex Match Play Championships on Nov 2-3 (which UNLV won) and won the Dunes Invitational at Hilton Head, SC on the 16th on Nov.

UNLV will be the host college for the 1998 Masters of College Golf, March 12-15.

At the 1998 WAC conference awards, UNLV received the most honors of any college. Coach Dwaine Knight was named the WAC Coach of the Year, plus Bill Lunde ( 1998 Senior ) and Jeremy Anderson earned all-WAC honors. I might point out that UNLV was the only school to have more than one player named to the all-WAC team. They have been the no. 1 team, unanimously, since November 1997, in all the polls. That tells you the caliber of play and spirit of the UNLV golf team.

Coach Knight was also named the Golfweek's Division 1 National Coach of the Year. It is the 2nd time he has received this honor.

UNLV junior Chris Berry was named the 1997-98 UNLV Olympic Sports Sportsman on the year.

If your a high school student looking for a golf college, or a college student want to increase the level of play, check UNLV out. They are going to be a force to recon with for years to come.

Four of the Rebel team has earned All-Americam status from the Golf Coaches Association of America. That is quite an honor to place on one team. Bill Lunde (Sr ) and Jeremy Anderson (Soph) were named to the 2nd team; Chris Berry & Charley Hoffman (both Jr ) were honorable mentiion. Anderson finished the season ranked 9th in the nation, and Lunde ranked 10th.

AND THIS:
Four ex UNLV Rebel golf team members made their mark for the 1998 U.S. Open. Edward Fryatt, Ted Oh, & Wes Weston, qualified to play, and Chris Riley as an alternate. But, I am sad to say, all missed the cut. But just watch them and see their future unfold.
