-- Driving Ranges --
In addition to the driving ranges available at each course, there are two specialty ranges in town.
DR2. Green Valley Golf Range -
Warm Springs Rd. & Stephanie, Henderson,
About 20 minutes from the strip, 24 hour lighted facility, lessons available, snack bar, putting green. All shaded stations have misters for cooler summer practice. It has changed greatly since it opened, it is now just a shell of its former glory. Where once a long green carpeted landing area - with mounded greens - was, is now going to be filled with apartment buildings. They have cut it down to about 7 teeing stations, with automatic ball feeders, and you will now be hitting into a net, about 25ft in front of where you stand to tee off. Big deal, I can do that at home!

DR3. Jupiter Golf Center -
70 West Craig Road, North Las Vegas, NV. Ph.Call Toll Free: 1-866-457-0062
Our Local No.: 702-577-2220
Located east of Craig Ranch Golf Course, and about 2 miles west of I-15, is a family oriented practice facility. I say family oriented because it not only has a golf driving range, but also has a miniature golf putting course, baseball and softball batting cages, and a video arcade. For the golfer, there is a covered, two-tiered driving range with synthetic turf mats, a short game area for pitching, chipping and bunker play, and a putting green.

-- Courses Under Construction or Planning --
Las Vegas is still growing - and thankfully, so are the number of courses. Remember, we can build 365 days out of the year here, so we are not really slowed down by the winter. Take a look at what is in our future for golf courses. There are 31 new courses planned for the area and are either in the construction or planning stages. Is this dang place growing or what? Unfortunately, most of them have two things in mind - private or high priced courses. And this causes added pressure on the reasonable priced courses. There is starting to be talk of Las Vegas being overbuilt with golf courses, and the play is not appearing to be there - hogwash! Lower the prices to something more in line with the public, and they will fill the courses with players.

What opening problems they have had! The original ground breaking was to be in February, 1998, at an area near the Silver Bowl, but that location changed and so did the ground breaking. Then it was scheduled for the first week in July 1998, with scheduled completion date in December of 1998. Once again delays and problems changed that - and the location - but finally, it looks like they will make a new scheduled opening date of May 2002. (This was mainly due to a change in ownership, etc.) But, nope - guess again guys......... Just talked to them (05-01) and now they are saying maybe August...... Well I'll be danged! I just found out (08-26) that date won't happen either. Seems they have run into more delays -partly due to access roads being finished - you can see the course, you just can't get there. They are now talking that it probably will be late December 2002 or January 2003. I'm about to give up on this course ever opening!
The course will be aimed at the affordable golfing range of $75. Designed by Ted Robinson Sr. ( who designed Rhodes Ranch, Canyon Gate Country Club & the 1998 PGA Championship site course of Sahalee in the Seattle area ). It is located in Henderson at the area of Lake Mead & Olsen near I-215 & US 95, and will be managed by OB Sports. The course offers 4 sets of tees, and plays 6,906 yards from the back tees, with wide fairways, large greens, some lakes, other water features and few forced carries, so it should not drive you nuts. The 2nd hole - a Par 5 - is the longest at 563 yards. The course will also have three putting greens, chipping area and driving range.
Added Notes:
Now granted this may be for prime season rates, but it sure is higher than we were lead to believe. ( I kind of figured that!)

Rainbow Canyon Golf Club -

Red Rock Country Club - Mountain Course
Adding a 2nd 18 holes to the existing layout, they are doing it a little different. When completed, each of the new 9 holes will become the back nine for both courses. In other words, the present front nine plus nine holes of the new course will be one course, and the back nine of the present course plus nine holes of the new course will be the 2nd 18 holes. Hummmmmm....... The new course will be called the Mountain course. In addition to the new course, the original 18 holes are getting a remake. All of this will be finished and ready for play by the summer of 2003.

The first opened is the Wolf Creek at Paradise Canyon Resort in October, with the Falcon Ridge the second course. It was originally scheduled to open at the end of 2001, , then moved back to around April-May, 2002, and then October 2002. Now they are looking at spring of 2003. No- this course is not a figament of my imagination - It just keeps getting moved back. It will have seven lakes and two streams to mess with your mind. Another course through the desert area of Mesquite. With three sets of Tees, the Championship is 6153yds, Masters at 5618yds and the Classics at 4396yds, it will offer a layout for everyone.

GENERAL PLANNING - 17 Courses
BOULDER CITY - 1
Not to let the growth of golf in the valley to pass them by, the Boulder City Planning Committee is looking into a third course for the city. This course, yet named, will be located in the same general area as the Boulder City Municipal Golf Course and the new Boulder Creek Golf Course.
HENDERSON - 3
El Grande Hombre -
Today - May 14, 2002, Billy Walters, chief operating officer of Walters Golf, which owns Stallion Mountain Country Club, Desert Pines Golf Club, Royal Links Golf Club and Bali Hai Golf Club, announced yet another course he is building. He recently signed PGA Tour star John Daly to serve as an architectural consultant for a course he is developing in southwest Las Vegas, off the 215 beltway near Durango, and is going to mount a campaign to acquire as many as four additional properties. Walters plans to break ground on his newest course, El Grande Hombre, in the fall, with a fall 2003 opening expected. Daly has been consulting with designers Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley on the course's routing.
Whitney Ranch Mesa Municipal Golf Course -
A 204 acre space has long been set aside for an 18 hole municipal golf course, located in the Green Valley area near Sunset and Whitney Ranch Road. In September 2000, a developer was secured for the $15.5 million course, and things were looking good, with an anticipated opening of sometime in 2003. However, on February 6, 2002, just before formalizing the agreement to build and operate the course, the developer has pulled out of the deal. So when now? Who knows.
Name Unknown -
In the planning stages - at least in the thinking stages - is another 18 hole municipal type course of championship length. They are only doing a "feasibility study" at this time, looking into the costs, pricing, revenues and the market. Some planning - it will be located adjacent to the "Tuscany Golf Course". Hey guys, what's wrong with the above location?
LAS VEGAS - 8
Desert Breeze - Las Vegas
Also from the owner of Desert Pines, Stallion Mountain (Sunrise), and Bali Hai, Billy Walters has plans underway to build yet a another course. This will be a links style course, located at Flamingo & Durango (on the west side of town).
LV Paiute Resort - Las Vegas
One more course is planned in the same area as Snow Mountain, Sun Mountain, and The Wolf. I heard the new course is to be named "The Falcon", although I think that is a little close to "Falcon Ridge", just like "Wolf Creek" is too close to "The Wolf". It seems to me there is going to be more confusion added to the list.
Summerlin Area - Las Vegas
The master plan calls for four ( 4 ) additional courses to be built in the NW part of town. They will be a combination of both public and private courses.
The Red Ridge at Summerlin - Las Vegas.
Another 18 hole daily fees course is planned for the Summerlin area.
Palm City Golf Course - Las Vegas
A daily fee housing development golf course.
NORTH LAS VEGAS - 3
Name not announced - North Las Vegas, NV.
Construction is expected to begin in October for a new 18 hole course in North Las Vegas. The course will be designed by Gary Panks (from Scottsdale, AZ) who designed the "The Legacy Resort - Phoenix, AZ - site of the 2000 LPGA Standard Register Ping tournament, and the "Talon Course at Greyhawk" - site of the finals of the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf. Gary also designed the putting course at the Angel Park complex here in Las Vegas, however, this will be his first full size course in the Las Vegas area. It will be located in a master planned community being developed jointly by Dell Webb and American Nevada Corp.
Shadow Creek Area - North Las Vegas, NV.
Steve Wynn was planning 2 additional courses that are adjacent to the present Shadow Creek Golf Course. These will be of the same style and caliber but open for public play. With the selling of his hotels and Shadow Creek, I don't know how this will effect the planned courses, but it has been turned over to the Mirage Corp., and has been referred to as the Mirage Resort Golf Course. When I know more, it will be posted.
MUDDY RIVER - 2
About 40 miles northeast of Las Vegas is Coyote Springs, located - where else - in the Coyote Springs Valley. There Jack Nicklaus is at it again. He is designing not one - but two new courses with a possibility for more. This will be a master planned community home development for about 50,000 residents. Hey, thats not a community - that a town!. No scheduled opening date as yet.
-- A Moment of Silence Please --
A moment of silence for four departed 18 hole and 2 par 3 courses. Unmercifully destroyed, bulldozed apart and removed forever from the Las Vegas golf scene.
The Aladdin Par 3 - A super fun and pretty little par 3 that offered many diverse types of shots. Located on the grounds and behind the Aladdin Hotel. Covered over to expand the hotel.
The Fairway to the Stars - Located in what was then the far outside area of Las Vegas, It was designed & owned by Louis Prima. The fairways were so narrow that we often joked that you should wear a hard hat when playing. It was an interesting course, popular in the early 70's, with some greens serving two & three fairways. Quite a few of the strip stars of the time could be seen playing the course. Fell into disrepair and closed after Prima's death.
The Tropicana Golf & Country Club - A fantastic challenge of golf skills, with shots over canyons, water, to blind fairways and greens. Now the site of the MGM Grand Hotel & Theme Park.
The Dunes Golf & Country Club - A long ( 7240 yds ) and beautiful test of nerves and sand skills with a thousand sand traps and gorgeous greens. Now the site of the Bellagio Hotel.

What a course! The history alone is something else. It was the first course to host a PGA tournament for Las Vegas back in 1953. It is the only course in the U.S. to host all 3 tours in the same year. You probably have seen this course on TV many times. The host course to the first PGA Tour Championship and the first LPGA Tour Championship. It continues every year as a host for the LPGA Tour Championship and as a rotation course of the LV Invitational. It is also a host course for a NCAA Golf Tournament. There are 7 holes where water comes into play. Recently redone, it is even more of a test. The DI is a flat but well taken care of course, there are a lot of trees, sand traps and water to test your skills - or aggravate the heck out of you. It will reward you with a great game if you place your shots in the fairways. They have added the new Global Positioning Computers in the carts, which help you with the distances and lowers your score. It is built in the middle of the hustle of the strip hotels, and is surrounded by houses. It is classified as a public resort course, but you must call for availability. Rated #9 of the top 10 in Nevada by Golf Digest, May 1997. Be sure to look in the clubhouse at all the historical photos of the course and past winners.
NOTE: Play it while you can, on September 31, 2001, this course will close forever! It will be bulldozed down and the land used to build a new and larger hotel & casino. And yes, they are keeping it in pristine condition until the last day! It saddens me greatly to see this happen - such a tradition of history gone forever!
DOUBLE NOTE: There is light at the end of the tunnel - there is sunshine on the horizon - there is hope! Today, August 23, 2001, Steve announced the he is going to keep the course open and include it in his new hotel plans. You can read about his plans for the area at: Wynn's lofty plan. Also read the locals reaction to the news: Locals hail plan.
TRIPLE NOTE: Ohhhhhh...., how things change! Bring our hearts up with hope - then step on 'um! The course will now remain open until July 1, 2002! It will then close for 14-18 months for the construction of a totally new course. But there will never be a replacement for this fine lady of golf!

- Map of Course Locations -
To give you a rough idea of where the courses are located in relation to where you may be staying, I have included a color coded map. It is not to any scale, and only some major streets are shown. I am not a map maker - as you can tell - but it should give you the basic idea. The colors of the numbers correspond to the color coding of the different sections of courses. I did notice that if you use the web site information by "iGolf", there are very detailed maps to the location of each course. You can zoom in and out to get a really good picture of the relationships of the course to where you will be staying. If "iGolf" has a link to the course, it is located under "Additional web information" at the end of the description of each course.
This map has been "Image Mapped", so you can move your cursor over the number of the course desired and left click. You will then be taken to the description of that selected course.
