Reflection Bay Golf Club

Reflection Bay is not just a picturesque golf course set along the shores of the impressive Lake Las Vegas. It's Jack Nicklaus' first "signature" public design in Nevada, which as Head Professional Dan Romstead explains, "means that Jack was actually here, saying moving that dirt there."

This care from the Golden Bear shows up on a golf course that brings a healthy dose of water to the usual desert golf scene.

It is easy to forget you are in Las Vegas here. The lake views, sand and palm trees transport you to another land where fun golf reigns supreme.

Five holes run along a mile of shoreline and Nicklaus cleverly employs this natural hazard to maximum effect. The par-5 18th is a dogleg right with bunkers looming in the middle of the landing area and a split fairway that sends shots screaming for the lake. Even if you play it safe to the left, the lake lurks near the green as you think about going for this big, inviting green. This final hole is typical of this enjoyable, challenging and beautiful course.

This Nicklaus design also provides equal opportunity thrills.

Reflection Bay plays from five sets of tees and winds through a series of different landscapes including rugged arroyos, deep valleys, rolling hillsides and, of course, lake shore. This course measures 7,261 yards from the tournament back tees and a comfortable 5,166 yards from the fronts. Most players will find a complete challenge from either the Whites or Blues, which play at 6,391 and 6,862 yards respectively.

Reflection Bay is routinely rated in the Top 50 courses for women and is one of the rare high-end courses that actually endorses family golf. This is the kind of place you can play with your kid without getting dirty looks.

"It's really accessible for families and female golfers," Romstead said. "It doesn't take them out of the equation."

The variety of terrain allowed Nicklaus to show his mastery as he shapes holes to the landscape. One of his most noticeable traits, the well-protected green that demands strong iron play, is evident throughout the layout.

Nicklaus takes subtle uphill holes and plants well-placed bunkers in front to force you to clear it. He takes a downhill par five and tilts a green just enough to force a soft entry to land in two. As the holes wind out along the water, he brings water, sand, and trees all into play to make you think twice before you pull the trigger. He is not being cruel, he just wants you to prove your worth with each shot.

One of the greatest players in history is one of the most respected course architects in golf and everything came together for Jack Nicklaus at Reflection Bay. No wonder he wanted to put his signature on it.
